GEOGRAPHY
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, widely known as Puerto Rico, is an island located in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is a territory of the United States of America. The island of Puerto Rico is in a cluster of islands called the Greater Antilles, and is one of just about 7,000 islands located in and around the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is one of the easternmost and smallest islands in the Greater Antilles. The island is 111 miles East to West and 36 miles North to South. The island has a rectangular shape and has a total of 9,104 square kilometers, roughly three times the size of Rhode Island, and has a coastline of 501 Kilometers. Due to the size of the island, the climate is not very diverse. The one climate that spans the whole island is Tropical Marine, which can be found in other places around the Caribbean and parts of Brazil. This climate makes the island wet, hot, and humid and often brings hurricanes through. On average, around five hurricanes come through Puerto Rico per year. Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria were some of the biggest hurricanes that came through Puerto Rico. The island experiences more rain on the west coast in cities like Cabo Rojo and Isabela. The hottest time to be on the island is June, with an average temperature of 82º, and the coldest time of year is January with an average of 70º. The coldest temperature to ever hit Puerto Rico is 60º. Puerto Rico experiences travel season from December to April when the weather is hot and dry. There are more beaches around the coastal areas, and more than 75% of the island has hills and mountains too steep for mechanized civilization. The mountain ranges have several mountains, including the Cerro de Punta, the highest point on the island at 1338 meters. The lowest point on the island is the Atlantic Ocean, which is at Sea level. The average height of the island is 261 meters. The island averages 180 inches of rainfall a year but it varies depending on the location on the island and time of year. The island has very diverse wildlife, like the Coqui frog, which is one of the unofficial animals of the country and it represents the Culture of the island. Other animals in Puerto Rico are the Puerto Rico parrot and the Puerto Rico Woodpecker. Because of the tropical climate, Puerto Rico is a wet and humid country with many beaches and mountains.
