El Yunque Rainforest
The El Yunque Rainforest is located in the northeast region of Puerto Rico, near the Río Grande and the coastline. The visitor center where most of the hiking trails start is just a 45-minute drive from San Juan, making it very easily accessible for many of the people living there and the tourists. The rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. Many hiking trails go through the rainforest, and you can find diverse wildlife. Some of the animals include Bats and other mammals. The highest elevations receive about 200 inches of rain a year. The rainforest is about 29,000 acres of land, with most of the area dedicated to hiking and other recreational activities like bird watching, and swimming in the many bodies of water and waterfalls, making it one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Puerto Rico.
